New Location, Same Great Tournament!

This past February 2020, Enfield RFC hosted its fifth annual Sweetheart 7s Tournament.

In spite of the setback from our regular venue of the East Hants Sportsplex not being available due to storm related damages, the tournament was a huge success! On relatively short notice, the Credit Union Rec Complex stepped up to host the tournament. This was the first time the venue had hosted a rugby event like this and the Nova Scotia Rugby community made a great impression.

With the smaller space, came less space for teams. From its inaugural year in 2016 with 19 teams in senior men's and women's divisions, the tournament had grown to over 28 participating teams in 2019. The divisions had expanded to include junior boys and girls divisions being added in 2018. Unfortunately, we were not able to have a junior division this year but were still able to host ten teams from across the province. We look forward to hosting a junior division again in the future.

This year the divisions were all hotly contested across the board, with the the Enfield RFC men winning their division for the first time in the five years of the tournament.

Participating Teams:

Women's Division:

  1. Halifax RFC

  2. Enfield RFC

  3. Truro Saints RFC

  4. Valley Rugby Union

  5. Riverlake Ramblers RFC

Men's Division:

  1. Enfield RFC

  2. Valley Rugby Union

  3. South Shore Buccaneers

  4. Dalhousie RFC

  5. Riverlake Ramblers RFC

Winners:

  • Women's Division: Halifax RFC

  • Men's Division: Enfield RFC

The South Shore Buccaneers, participating in their first rugby sevens tournament ever, earned second place in the men's division.

To round out the tournament, Moosehead Breweries provided a (very popular) beer garden with a great view of the matches overlooking the pitch. A club-run canteen was also a popular stop in between matches. Safer Smiles provided custom mouth guards on location and even donated a mouth guard to a lucky draw winner.

Speaking of volunteers, the tournament could not have been such a success without the help of all of the passionate volunteers from the Enfield RFC community. Thanks to Courtney Munroe for her on-site medical support; Jacy McNutt for organizing volunteers; Kyle Cigolotti for heading the organizing committee with huge support from Ashley Brooker and the Valley Rugby Union; Adrienne MacDonald for handling the tournament financials; Daniela Mayo for organizing and preparing the food for the canteen; Kelly Cigolotti for the family friendly tunes and snapping some great pics; Cailin Winters for taking care of all of the social media; everyone that helped with the beer garden and merch table (too many to list - popular spot); and many many more that helped to make the date a success.

Special thanks to the staff at the Credit Union Rec Centre for their help and to the referees who did a fantastic job and used the tournament as a training opportunity (how many social tournaments have micced up ARs?). Thanks also goes out to the Elmsdale Superstore for their donations of coffee and tea for the canteen.

We look forward to continuing to grow the tournament and to maintain a good standard of quality for rugby in the Maritimes. Thanks to all of the teams that attended and to all the supporters that came out to cheer their teams on. Looking forward to 2021! 'Magine
