We are just into the rugby year, and things have been very busy already between training, provincial programs, high school rugby and some pre-season tournaments. What has the Enfield RFC been up to you ask? How about a bit of an update:
High School Rugby
Last weekend the Hants East Rural High Tigers wrapped up their 2017 seasons in fine fashion.
The girls won the regional championship and had a strong showing at the Nova Scotia Division II
Provincial Championships where they lost to West Kings and beat Millwood on day one and lost to Horton High in the semi-finals.
The boys cleanly won the Division II Provincial Championship at the Lion’s Den in Enfield over Millwood, following round-robin wins over Horton, Millwood and Cape Breton.
The Enfield RFC is very proud of its coaches’ contribution to the Tigers’ success and is excited to welcome many of the HERH players into the Enfield RFC fold this coming season. We’ve been training together regularly this spring and hope to continue on.
Leading into the Rugby Nova Scotia club season we are busy training on Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Lion’s Den, and welcome any new or old rugby players to come check things out. The season schedule is now available, and the registration page is live as well.
Pre-Season Tournaments
Enfield has been involved in two pre-season tournaments so far, and will be looking to enter the Halifax 7s on Saturday, 17 June. The men put a side in the Pigdogs Davin Moxsom Memorial 7s Tournament in Burnside and went 2-1, while both the men’s and women’s teams participated in the Riverlake 10s in Truro where the men went 1-2 and the women went 2-1.
Mini Rugby
As for our Mini Rugby Program, we are excited to announce that it is not too late to register (online and in person) and that we had a wonderful turnout at the Registration Sessions at the East Hants Sportsplex. The mini sessions will be starting up on June 27th and 29th. We were also lucky enough to be able to send Jason Purcell off to the Rookie Rugby Day where he was able to get caught up with the new plans from Rugby Canada and learn from Erin Kennedy of Rugby Canada and formerly from Rugby USA. Provincial and Regional Rugby
Enfield RFC players are hard at it with provincial and regional rugby as always:
Devon Rose was off to Ireland with the U19 Rock.
The Keltics senior women played a pre-season game against Prince Edward Island which featured four Enfield RFC players, Daniela Mayo, Adrienne MacDonald, Joan Cole and Tasha Mackenzie, while Daniela Mayo was selected player of the game. The Keltics will play at the CRC nationals in Truro in August.
The Keltics senior men played against the PEI Mudmen and were captained by Evan Dickie. The match featured six Enfield players including Evan Dickie, Kyle Cigolotti, Sam MacDonell, Michael McNamara, Mark Sweeney, and Stewart Cook. The Keltics are off to Eastern Canadians in St. John's in June.
The Keltics U23 men recently played pre-season matches versus Dartmouth and Pictou County and will head to St. John's in June. Alex Malay, Scotty Marrison and Cameron Farnell have been playing with the U23s.
The Keltics U18 men have been busy with ID camps and trial matches and have recently released a training group in preparation for Easterns in July and Nationals in August. Included in the squad are Enfield RFC members Cameron Farnell, Ethan Whidden, and Brent Weir-Dean. The coaching staff includes Evan Dickie as head coach with Drew Hutt and Mark Sweeney as assistants.
Awards and Events
Cameron Farnell recently was presented with an East Hants Sports Award - 18 & Under Male Athlete of the Year
Daniela Mayo was recently awarded with a Support4Sport Award - Rugby NS Female Team Athlete of the Year
Some of Enfield’s members had the opportunity to attend a panel on Women in Sport with panelists that included Karen Paquin (member of the 2017 Canada World Cup Squad and Olympic medalist), Erin Kennedy (Rugby Canada Rookie Rugby), Gillian Florence (Rugby Canada Hall of Fame Inductee and veteran of 5 World Cups), and Dawn Dauphinee (Rugby Canada Board Member and First Nova Scotian Cap)
And we are also looking forward to the upcoming Tide Fest where we will be hosting the ball hockey tournament and have been working with a number of our community partners planning what will definitely be an awesome event!
