This past February 2019, Enfield RFC hosted its fourth annual Sweetheart 7s Tournament. From its inaugural year in 2016 with 19 teams in senior men's and women's divisions, the tournament has grown to over 28 participating teams from all over the Maritimes. The divisions have expanded as well, with junior boys and girls divisions being added in 2018. A mini jamboree has annually been a great opportunity to have young players, learning the game, to get out on the pitch and play.
This year the divisions were all hotly contested across the board, with the hosts coming away with some hardware. Winners:
Women's Division: Nova Scotia Senior Keltics
Women's Consolation Division: Enfield RFC
Men's Division: Pictou County RFC
Men's Consolation Division: Saint John Trojans
Girls Junior Division: Nova Scotia Junior Keltics
Boys Junior Division: Enfield RFC
To round out the tournament, Curly Portable's and Moosehead Breweries provided a (very popular) beer garden with a great view of the matches. Wendy with Safer Smiles provided custom mouth guards on location and even donated a mouth guard to a lucky draw winner. Curly Portable's also hosted a great after party for players, supporters, and volunteers.
Speaking of volunteers, the tournament could not have been such a success without the help of all of the passionate volunteers from the Enfield RFC community. Thanks to Paddy McNamara for his on-site medical support; Daniela Mayo and Jacy McNutt for organizing volunteers; Kyle Cigolotti for heading the organizing committee with support from Courtney Munroe and Jewlia Burke; Matthew MacNeil and Mark Sweeney for manning the registration table all day; Adrienne MacDonald for handling the tournament financials; Danielle Cable for helping with decorations; Drew Hutt, Evan Dickie, Brandon Horne, and Daniela for coaching; Jacy, Matty and Angela MacNeil, Stew and Monica Cook for helping with the mini jamboree; Cailin and Lynn for tending bar in the beer garden; Rod and Pam Dickie, Mark and Jen McManus, Paul and Helen Clark for holding down the swag table; and many many more that helped to make the date a success.
Special thanks to the East Hants Sportsplex for helping to organize the facility year over year and to the referees who did a fantastic job and even donated a portion of their fees to growing junior programs in the club.
We look forward to continuing to grow the tournament and to maintain a good standard of quality for rugby in the Maritimes. Thanks to all of the teams that attended and to all the supporters that came out to cheer their teams on. Looking forward to 2020! 'Magine
